DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD HADSELL (also HADSALL)

Submitted by Anne Brown.

Generation No. 1

1. EDWARD2 HADSELL (EDWARD1) was born 29 August 1789 in Pennsylvania,

and died 17 October 1855 in it is believed Marshall Co, W. VA. He

married MARY ANN "POLLY" MCLAUGHLIN 03 April 1814, daughter of EPHRAIM

MCLAUGHLIN and ELIZABETH "Betty" ZANE. Polly was born 01 January 1790

in VA or Ohio, and died 08 July 1836 in Ohio or VA.

13 Oct 2001, my husband, Joe and I visited Moundsville, Marshall Co.

WV. We were able to find Buchanan Hill Cemetery, and locate the grave

of Edward Hadsell Jr. It is on top of a hill with a beautiful view of

the surrounding hills. We had just arrived and were looking for the

graves of Edward, his wife, Mary Ann McLaughlin and three of their

grandchildren, the children of Eli W. Salter and Martha Hadsell. We

noticed bad looking storm clouds coming in and the wind had started to

pick up. We were afraid to stay longer, as the roads were very bad and

we did not want to be driving them during a storm.

I was able to find Edward's headstone, and see that the Salter

children, Willie, Eddie and Ada, were buried near him. I could not find

Mary Ann McLaughlin's stone. There was a stone right next to Edward's,

but it was partly caved in and no name could be found on it. I know

from records that Edward and Mary Ann had a daughter, Mary, buried near

them and another grandchild, their daughter Elizabeth Riggs' daughter,

is buried there also. I found space for these graves between the blank

stone and the Salter children.

It was discouraging to drive over 1000 miles, and not be able to spend

more time. Another DAR member later wrote to me and said she would take

more pictures of the graves. Her name is Gail Yoho and her son lives

next to the cemetery. In the pictures she sent, I could see the stone

of Mary Hadsell, daughter of Edward and Mary, at the foot of the stone

for Willie and Eddie Salter, infant sons of Martha and Eli Salter.
