Edward was Sioux (Santee)

Biography

Edward Hedges was born in 1870. In the Canton Asylum, 1910, List of Patients, his age is listed as 40 and his marital status as divorced.[1] He is also found in the 1911 list of patients at Hiawatha Asylum. He was in fact the first patient at Hiawatha admitted on Dec. 31, 1902, committed by the Santee Agency.

He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Charles and Sophia Hedges

He was a Sioux from Santee, Nebraska.[2] Carla Joinson states that Edward Hedges was the first Native American admitted to Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians. Joinson says from Orbuck Olson, the Only Indian printed in Sunshine Magazine, that Hedges was a professional baseball player.

(Curator Note: Edward was recruited by the Nebraska Indians from the Genoa Industrial School for Indian Youth as a pitcher. Never made it to the major league. Accessed 28 July 2023.)

He passed away on May 21, 1920 and was buried at Hiawatha Cemetery, Canton, South Dakota, United States.[3] His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.

1910 (1) Federal Census
Edward is enumerated twice on this census. He is now divorced and resides at the Hiawatha/ Canton "Insane Asylum" for Indians. He works as a shoemaker. Note that this is a federal census and that the Indian Insane Asylum in Canton Township seems to be what the government today refers to as a state-consolidated location, in other words, its own census-taking point. This is a list of inmates!
