Edward Hill, of Elizabeth City

EDWARD HILL was born in England in 1590. He married Mary Bowle [or Boyle]. Edward Hill came to Virginia prior to 1621. When he was living in Elizabeth City; he fought off the Indians and escaped the massacre of 1622. He was a member of the Council of Elizabeth City, Virginia. He died [and was buried] in Elizabeth City, Virginia on May 15, 1624.

An expedition of nine vessels was fitted out with supplied and men and women of 500 settlers. They sailed from Plymouth in May 1609. On the way over one of the vessels was wrecked within eight days sail of Virginia. They were caught in a hurricane, the vessels scattered by the storm reached Jamestown in August 1609. On the ship Diamond was ROBERT HILL, Gent, and his father-in-law WILLIAM ATKINSON. (No passenger list exists for the Diamond.)

ROBERT HILL was born in England in 1570 and died in Virginia prior to 1631. He married in England 1590, Judith, daughter of William Atkinson. One May 6, 1609 with his father-in-law having subscribed and paid 87 pounds 10 shillings, about $436.00 to the London Company he sailed on the ship Diamond under Captain Radcliffe, master, from Plymouth and reached Jamestown in August, 1609. Records of the Colony in 1624 show Col. Robert Hill returned to England, but came back to Virginia prior to 1630 as he was in Elizabeth City April 15, 1630.

• EDWARD HILL born in England 1590 died in Elizabeth City, Virginia May 15, 1624 married MARY BOYLE.
• John Hill born in England 1593. Came to Virginia and settled on Isle of Wight.
• Henry Hill born in England 1594. Came to Virginia and settled in Accomack County. Commander of Horse.

(Note: Several Hills are listed in Hotten's "Living and Dead" for Elizabeth City in 1623/4, but there are no notes of any relationships.)

EDWARD HILL was born in England in 1590. He married Mary Boyle, daughter of Richard Boyle of Blackfriar, London. Edward Hill came to Virginia prior to 1621. He was a member of the Council of Elizabeth City, Virginia. He died in Elizabeth City, Virginia on May 15, 1624. (Burial date from Hotten, Muster. Edward Hill also cited, sans rank, as patenting 100 acres in Elizabeth City, 1626 - Hotten, Patents Granted.)

• Col. Edward Hill born 1610. Burgess of Charles City, 1639. Speaker of the House. Died 1663.
• CAPTAIN THOMAS HILL born 1612 in England, died in York County, Virginia 1659 married MARY PIERSEY.
• John Hill born 1615. Appointed commissioner 1642.
• Mary Hill born 1617.
