About Edward Southey Joynes
Edward Southey Joynes (1834-1917) was a son of Thomas R Joynes & Anne Bell Satchell.
He was an American University Professor of Modern Languages, especially French and German. Although he taught at the College of William & Mary before the Civil War, the major portion of his career was spent teaching foreign languages at other Southern Universities during the Reconstruction Era.
In 1858, he was Professor of Greek & Greek Literature as well as German at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA.
After the war, he was hired by Robert E Lee to teach modern languages at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. He then served as the 1st Professor of Modern Languages at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN in 1875. Later, he was Professor of Modern Languages at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN and finally at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
He was a noted scholar & textbook author. He also helped pave the way for the establishment of the Columbia City School System and was a co-founder and Charter Member of the Board of Trustees at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Joynes Hall on it's campus is named in his honor.
