Edward Nelson, Sr., was born in 1690 in Essex, England, United Kingdom. His parents were James Nelson and Mary Nelson.

Edward married Mary Nelson in 1719 in New Kent County, VA,. Together they had the following children:

1. James Aaron Nelson;
2. Sarah Cosby;
3. Edward Nelson;
4. Rebecca Waddy;
5. Elizabeth Thompson;
6. Anne Harris;
7. Nancy Harris;
8. Mary Clough;
9. Amy Sydnor.

He died on November 19, 1739 in Louisa, Louisa County, Virginia, United States.

• His parents, dying while he was very young, was taken care of by an uncle.
• Having the acquaintance of a sea captain, the pictures of ocean adventures so dazzled his boyish imagination that he ran away from home, to sail with the Captain when he was only 14 years old.
• He followed the sea for 14 years, becoming the Captain of a vessel (from which he obtained his title of "Captain"). He came to Virginia and settled on Little River about 1718.
