"While I had known for some time that my grand-parents were in some way associated with Addington Hospital (Bayside as it was then called) I did not know until my visit to Durban in September 1962 that my grand-mother was the first Matron, and my grand-father Male attendant - their appointments dating from 1861 to 1865. Their salaries amounted to the princely sum of 36 pounds each PER ANNUM! I actually saw photographs of them and have myself made copies."
