About Edward P. Hildebrand

7/31/1889 Indiana Progress, page 5
The late E.P. Hildebrand, Esq., was buried last Monday, in Oakland Cemetery…
Mr. Hildebrand was born in Adams county, Pa., as we are informed, in 1819, and came to live in Indiana about 1848. For awhile he had charge of the post office, in connection with a drug store with William B. Clark, Esq., which they had purchased from the late Matthew Donavin. The deceased soon became the sole owner of the drug store and carried it on in a room adjoining the building of the Indiana County Deposit Bank, until 1860, when he was elected Prothonatory of the county and re-elected in 1863, serving continuously six years, until 1866. He then returned to mercantile business, and, for a number of years, had a dry goods store in the room now occupied, for that purpose, by Mrs. Hare, on Philadelphia street. The confinement of the store room impairing his health, he abandoned it, and for the past six years has been a most active and useful Justice of the Peace in West Indiana. In all the positions he filled, the deceased was efficient, competent, dutiful and obliging. He made a most excellent prothonotary and clerk of the courts. He left his office in complete systematic order to his successor; so settling his personal interest in it as to leave nothing but friendship behind. When in good health, he took a great interest in public affairs. He was decided in his political convictions, faithful and unwavering in his personal and political friendship. Many times, at the urgent request of political friends, he was chairman of the County Executive Committee of his party, and frequently a delegate to State Conventions. He always acted with that fidelity and integrity that elicited commendation and confidence.

Coming from that part of the State where the Pennsylvania Dutch was spoken, the deceased was of great service to the german population of this county in interpreting for them about their business transactions. As a Justice of the Peace, Mr. Hildebrand kept a most intelligent record…
Living a plain life, without any ostentation of insincere pretentions he sought to live as a christian and accepted without reserve or question the orthodox faith. For many years he had been a member of the church and died as such. He leaves surviving a wife and five children. His death was not a sudden one. For months disease and pain were slowly, but surely bringing the fatal end.
