Edward was 11 when, as was the custom, he was bound out to a tailor in Belfast where he served and apprenticeship as a tailor. He was 19 when he first heard the Mormon elders preach. He was baptized in 1847.

He was the first in his family to accept the gospel and he became a missionary for the LDS Church. His mother was very bitter against the church and drove him out of the house because she was afraid he would influence others in the family. He later baptized two of his brothers.

He married Sarah when he was 25. She followed him in his missionary labors for the next eight years. She was baptized in 1855. They had three sons during this time, one in Ireland, one in Scotland, and one in Wales. Edward and Sarah were eager to join the saints in the Valley in America and so in 1861, they left England for America.

Upon their arrival in the valley, they settled in Payson where Edward followed his trade as a tailor and he also farmed. In 1868 they moved to Salt Lake City where he worked as a tailor for ZCMI.

After four years, they returned to Payson where they lived for nine years. Edward always took and active part in civil and religious affairs. He was city marshal, and a lieutenant in the militia, serving in the Black Hawk Indian War. He held several positions in the church.

In 1881 he homesteaded 160 acres on the Sevier River just west of Fayette. In 1888 they moved to Manti to do temple work but Sarah died. Edward worked as a tailor to support the balance of his family. Five years later, he married Nancy, a widow. They had worked together tailoring for several years and continued to do so. He gave up tailoring as he got older and spent his time raising chickens. He was 92 when he died.

Edward claimed that though he was born in Ireland, he was of Scotch origin. 'Tis said that when asked how he could be a Scotsman when he was born in Ireland he would ask: “If a cat had kittens in the oven, would they be biscuits?”

(His son has also been quoted as saying this. They maybe have both used it.)
