The 3rd Earl of Derby. Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby (c. 10 May 1509–24 October 1572) was an English nobleman. At the age of thirteen, Edward received the titles and estates of his father, the 2nd Earl of Derby, and King Henry VIII took responsibility for bringing him up until he was of age. His commissioners, including Cardinal Thomas Wolsey were responsible for most of his affairs. In 1528, he accompanied Cardinal Wolsey on a mission to France, and in 1530, he was one of the peers who gave Pope Clement VII the declaration regarding Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon. That same year, the Duke of Norfolk decided to wed his eldest daughter, Catherine, to Edward; however, this was done without the King's permission (which was required). The King rebuked Howard but allowed the marriage to continue; unfortunately, Catherine became a victim of the plague a few weeks after the marriage. Undeterred, Howard's half-sister, Dorothy, became Edward's second wife.

In 1532, Edward accompanied King Henry to Boulogne, where they met with King Francis I of France. After this meeting, Edward became a Knight of the Bath. A few years later, Edward took a major role in quelling the Pilgrimage of Grace, a large (mainly church-related) rebellion started in Lincolnshire and spread into North England. In 1542, Edward accompanied the Duke of Norfolk on a raid into Scotland.

When Edward VI ascended to the throne in 1547, Edward became a Knight of the Garter, and in 1550, he was one of the peers who were present at the peace proceedings with Scotland and France. A year later, various charges were brought against him (with little or no evidence), mainly due to his opposition to clerical reform. However, when Queen Mary ascended to the throne, he was again in favour, and was appointed Lord High Steward and became a Privy Councillor. He was a commissioner of Lady Jane Grey's trial, and was frequently present during the trials of accused heretics. He remained in favour under Queen Elizabeth I's reign, and remained on her Privy Council. She eventually appointed him Chamberlain of Chester.

Edward Stanley died at Lathom House, and his titles and estates were passed on to his eldest son, Henry Stanley.

ANNE HASTINGS (c.1485-November 17, 1550)

Anne Hastings was the daughter of Edward, 2nd baron Hastings (November 25, 1466-November 8, 1506) and Mary Hungerford (c.1468-July 10, 1533). Anne was married to John Radcliffe, Lord Fitzwalter (1442-1496) as a child. In 1507, she married Thomas Stanley, 2nd earl of Derby (1485-May 23, 1521) and was the mother of Edward, 3rd earl (May 10,1508-October 24,1572), John, Anne, Margaret (d. January 1534), Henry (d. June 29, 1528), James, George, Thomas (c.1515-1538), and Jane. Anne was at the court of Catherine of Aragon as the youngest of her ladies in waiting in 1509 and at the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520. In 1542, when her son-in-law, Robert, earl of Sussex, died he gave Anne custody of his daughter, Jane (her mother was Anne's late daughter Margaret) as well as the wardship of young Lord Berkeley, intended as the girl's husband. In 1545, Anne sold Berkeley's wardship to his mother for £1000. In her will, Anne left Jane clothing, furnishings, and the profits of that sale.

Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby was born on 10 May 1509. He was the son of Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby and Anne Hastings.He married, secondly, Margaret Barlow, daughter of Ellis Barlow.He married, firstly, Lady Dorothy Howard, daughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and Agnes Tilney, circa 21 February 1530.He married, thirdly, Mary Cotton, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir George Cotton, before 1 January 1561/62. He died on 24 October 1572 at age 63.

Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Mohun on 23 May 1521.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Lord Stanley [E., 1456] on 23 May 1521. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Derby [E., 1485] on 23 May 1521. He succeeded to the title of 11th Lord Strange, of Knokyn on 23 May 1521. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in 1533. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1547. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1552 and 1572.1 He held the office of Lord High Steward in 1553. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1553. He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Lancashire and Cheshire between 1553 and 1569. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1558. He held the office of Chamberlain of Chester between 1559 and 1565. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire between 1569 and 1572.
