About Edward Stewart

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stewart-27210
Edward Stewart was born between c1695 and c1700 in Varina, near the Hatcher's in Henrico County, Va. His birthplace was likely the Lester farm near Turkey Island Creek. Charles Stewart, believed to be Edward's father, seems to have been living on a parcel of land owned by the Lester's at about that time that Edward Stewart was born. Charles Stewart's apparent sister Jane married Edward Lester. This might be how the name Edward came into this Stewart family. Edward Stewart married Martha Tanner about 1721. The Tanner's were one of the more socially prominent families in Henrico and it is a puzzle how their marriage came about though it is proven in a court petition of 1723 regarding the estate of Martha's deceased father Edward Tanner. Martha's mother was Mary Hatcher Tanner. In 1745 Edward Stewart and wife Martha were living on a 160 acre tract owned by a Henry Hatcher on southside James River in what was formerly Henrico County but became Chesterfield County. The land was near the Tanner Plantation called "Baldwins" on the river. Edward Stewart, sometimes Stuart, made his will in 1761 being in failing health. He asked for the privacy that his estate not be appraised. He died in the Fall of 1762. The will names, "my loving wife Martha Stuart" and children, Edward, William, Mary Jane, and Martha. Some believe that Edward, Sr. had a mulatto son also named Edward Stewart. There was such a man living near them according to a court record. Edward Stewart, Sr. and wife Martha are thought to be buried in what are now unmarked graves at the former Ware Bottom Church Cemetery near their home. The church is extinct but the graveyard site is located at what is today (2018) the corner of Ware Bottom Spring Road (898) & Ramblewood Drive (617) near Chester, Va. Efforts are under way to protect the site from modern development.
