About Edward Tucker
Was a farmer & sawyer in Hawke's Bay. His run was SHERWOOD:
From Early Stations in Hawke's bay:
About 1,200 feet above sea level on the North Makaretu road, nine miles from Takapau, and eight miles west of the Napier-Palmerston North highway, Sherwood began as a small holding of less than 1,000 acres that had been cut from the Ashcott (6) property. It was taken up in the late 1860s by Edward Tucker, who had arrived at New Plymouth in the barque William Bryan in 1841. He was the eldest of eight brothers and three sisters who sailed in the Plymouth Company's first immigrant ship, and members of his family later settled at Clive. The land was mainly covered in forest, which possibly suggested the name. In 1872 Tucker had 445 sheep on the property, and by 1875 this figure had increased to 706. By 1876 the number had dropped again to 428, and at this period the property had been reduced to about 400 acres. For a short time his brother-in-law, Nathianel Harwood, took over Sherwood, and a few years later the property was sold to Thomas White of Kent."
