Edward Wheeler, the son of John Wheeler and Agnes (Yeoman) Wheeler, was baptized at St. Thomas' in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England on February 12, 1612/3.[1][2]
Edward married Elizabeth Collins at St. Thomas' in Salisbury on May 1, 1634 Elizabeth Collins.[3][2]
Edward and Elizabeth had the following children, all baptized at St. Thomas' in Salisbury, England:
- Sarah, bpt. March 15, 1634/5[4]
- Christropher, bpt. October 8, 1637,[5] m. 1658 Sarah Syler at St. Edmunds, Salisbury, England,[6] bur. January 12, 1673/4 in Salisbury, England[7]
- John, bpt. November 11, 1649, [8] m. February 20, 1671/2 Dorothy Fulker in Great Wishford, Wiltshire,[9] had children in Salisbury, Wiltshire from 1674[10] to 1679[11]
- Peter, bpt. April 25, 1652[12]
Edward appears to have remained in England with his brothers John and Adam when his parents and younger siblings emigrated to New England about 1639,[13] although the 12-year break in baptismal records for his children in England in 1637-1649 is curious.
Edward may have been living in Odstock, just outside of Salisbury, by 1666. A record shows the burial in Odstock on October 21, 1666 of Elizabeth Wheeler, the wife of Edward Wheeler, which probably relates to Edward's wife.[14]
Edward was living (or at least believed by his father to be living) in Salisbury, England in March 1668 when his father made a bequest to him in his will.[15]
Edward may have been the Edward Wheeler who was buried in Wiltshire on August 13, 1694.[16]
Birth
Contrary to the impression created by the use of the Julian calendar date, Edward Wheeler was not born less than a month after his parents' marriage. Actually, the birth date is January of 1613 on the Gregorian (modern) calendar, twelve months and a few weeks after the marriage. Clearly, he was a twin (two sons of the same couple christened on the same day). In order to minimize confusion, I changed the year of "birth" to the Gregorian calendar year of 1613.
Named in his father’s will:
John Wheelwe made the following will on March 28, 1668: Will Probated October … : To his son Edward Wheeler of the city of Salisbury in the Realm of England, £10 of which he is to pay £ 3 : 10: 0 to the chamber of the city.
