- Origin of Name WOODWARD & Bayeux Tapestry, 1066, Normandy (northern France) ID: I636672015, Name: Edward WOODWARD, Given Name: Edward, Surname: WOODWARD, Sex: M, Birth: Mar 27 1607, Upton Cum Chalvey, Buckingham, EnglandDeath: 7 OCT 1706 in Middletown Twp., Delaware, PA,
- Edward Woodward b1607 has the documented birth record for being born to Edward Sr. Woodward b1572 who married Elizabeth Oxenbridge. And the London Visitation chart does say Edward was the father of Edward who married Alice Scrope from Luxnor. The fact then is if we see clear evidence that Richard I Woodward and his sister Elizabeth Eavenson who immigrated to PA came from the Edward and Alice who birthed at least most of their children in Acton, Cheshire, then this Edward is properly the one. He has the strong birth record and connection with his legitimate father and mother.
- It appeard that only Edwards family immigrated to America in or about 1687. They were Edward's son Richard, Richard's wife Jane, along with their two sons, Richard jr. & William and their daughter Martha; Edwards son Robert with his wife and their son Richard; and Edward's daughter Elizabeth; along with them came, Edwards son-in-law Thomas Eavenson (husband of Edwards deceased daughter Hannah who brought along his two sons Ralph & Richard {He would later marry his sister-in-law Elizabeth).
- Edmund Arthur conveyed Wexham in 1610 to EDWARD WOODWARD (father), whose family had owned land in the neighbourhood for at least four generations. He and his son EDWARD broke the entail in 1638, and two years later conveyed the manor to Richard Winwood.
- The immigrant ancestor of all the Woodwards in America was RICHARD WOODWARD, who was born in England, and sailed in the ship "Elizabeth," April 30, 1635.
- The ROBERT BURL WOODWARD ( INFORMATION PAGE ) on Genealogy.com (2004) has good information on the emigration of Edward Woodward's family from England to Pennsylvania and their purchase of land acquired originally by William Penn.
- Richard Woodward bought land in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1688 from John Simcock (See Quaker Migration for more about migration and land purchases, and see the Chester Survey 1683 for location of Simcock land.) Simcock may have been responsible for the Woodwards' migration as he, too, lived in Acton Parish, Cheshire, England, at one time (See map of England). The Woodward land purchase is not found in the Chester County Land Records but is documented in the Chester County Court: "Att a Court held att Chester for ye County of Chester ye 3d day in ye 1st Weeke of ye 10th month 1688: ... John SYMCOCKE made over a Deed dated ye 6th day of ye 1st month 1687 for 230 acres of Land lying in Thornbury unto Richard WOODWARD by his Attorney John HODSKINS." (Records of the Courts of Chester County, Pa 1681-1696/7, page 140)(Courtesy Judy Ardine). Smith's "Atlas of Delaware County" shows this tract with this purchase date belonging to Richard Woodward. Quoting from Smith's "Atlas" the Encyclopedia of American Biography mentions that another tract is shown for Richard Woodward of 250 acres purchased February 15, 1695. Its eastern boundary was Ridley Creek...in length the tract averaged slightly more than a mile, in breadth a quarter mile or more. The road laid out from Edgemont to Chester in December 1687, called Middletown Road, divided the farm of Richard Woodward almost exactly in half.
- Edward Woodward bought land from The Chester County Pennsylvania United States Record of The Courts 1704, delivered a deed to Phillip Taylor For 200 acres of land in Thornbury, with all the improvements there upon dated the 30th day of May 1704. This seems to be a couple of years before he died.
