About Edwin Walter Marchant

Edwin Walter Marchant

Mr. E. W. MARCHANT

Mr. Edwin W. Marchant, who died at North Unley, was born in Devonshire, in 1849. He arrived at the Semaphore anchorage in 1861 by the sailing ship Harwich (Captain Franklin) with his parents, two brothers, and a sister, now Mrs. Dellow, of Largs Bay. Mr. Marchant went to the Victorian gold diggings, but, meeting with no success, he walked from Melbourne to Brisbane.

He returned to Adelaide and worked as a miller in the Light square flour mills, under the super vision of his father. Later he was a photographer at Clare. Peterborouh, Kadina, and Unley. While at Clare he took a leading part In the establishment of the Baptist Church. In 1881 he married Katherine the eldest daughter of Mr. William Hooper.

There are two sons— George Lionel, of Melbourne, and Edwin Ralph, of Adelaide — and one daughter— Mrs. E. Phelan, of Unley. Thirteen years ago Mr. Marchant suffered a paralytic stroke, and was incapacitated until his death. He was a member of the Rechabite Lodge for 61 years, and of the Oddfellows Lodge for 55 years.
