Edwin Lewellyn Whitaker

Edwin Llewellyn Whitaker son of Edwin Stanton was born 16 September 1890 in Unity Maine,. He attended school at Troy Center in Troy. He worked with his father, cutting wood, trapping, hunting and on the hay baling crew. Edwin married Edith Christine Morse on 12 March 1910 in Troy. He purchased a house on the Athens road in Hartland from Edith’s uncle Alpheus Morse around 1911. Their first child Arlene Ruth was born in Troy 2 October 1910, probably at the home of Edwin’s parents Edwin Stanton and Geneva. On 4 August 1912 their second child Ina Bernice was born in Hartland. On 2 March 1914 they had twins Clyde Lemont and Bessie Bella were born in Hartland. 26 days later on 28 March Bessie Bella died. She was buried in a small cemetery on the Athens road in Hartland.(There is no gravestone) Around 1915 they moved to Detroit. Sometime after that they purchased a house in Detroit village. During his trapping years it is claimed he killed an old black tomcat and sold its fur as mink. Around 1929 Edwin went to work on the Bingham dam. He got the bends while working on the dam and was partially cripple the rest of his life. In 1940 they had Edith’s uncle Will Temple living with them. He was 84 He operated an eel wier on the river in Detroit for several years and shipped barrels of eels all over the country. Later in life Edwin and Edith were divorced and Edwin moved to Bangor and ran a pawn shop. Edwin died in Bangor 11 February 1969 and is buried in the Detroit Village Cemetery. Edith died 2 Dec 1980
