In memoriam of Effie DeVane (Smith) Middleton, - 05/16/2011
Nahunta - Effie DeVane (Smith) Middleton, 86, of Nahunta, died Monday, May 16, 2011 in the Southeast Georgia Health System, following a brief illness.
Born in Hickox, she graduated from Nahunta High School and Andrew College in Cuthbert, GA. She taught school in Savannah, GA and in the Brantley County School System. She owned and operated the Flower & Gift Shop and the Paloma Restaurant & Court. She was employed by Waycross Area Program for Exceptional Children (WAPAC) for a number of years. An accomplished seamstress, she was the best known for her cooking and baking. She was a member of Friends of the Library, Nahunta Woman’s Club, Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club, a charter member of United Daughters of Confederacy and a Cub Scouts of America den mother. She was a devoted member of the Nahunta Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Mr. & Mrs. W.H.O. Smith, two sisters: Paunee Smith (infant) and Carolyn Smith Lewis, and her husband: Emory A. Middleton, all of Brantley County.
Survivors include: one daughter, Carolyn Middleton Adkins, three sons: William “Bill” (Dianne), Marcus “Mark” Middleton (Cindy), of Nahunta, and John Middleton, Hoboken, eight grandchildren, Kelly McBride, and Andrea Hurley of Montgomery, AL, Dustin and Dylan Middleton of Hoboken, Kaily, Megan, Ryan, and Cody Middleton of Nahunta, three great-grandchildren, Kacie McDonald, Kylee Kee and Vander Hurley of Montgomery, AL, two brothers, William Reginald(Bo) Smith, Nahunta and James LeVerne Smith (Molly), Perry, GA and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Nahunta United Methodist Church. Friends and Family are invited to stay for visitation following the service. In lieu of floral contributions, “Mrs. Effie” as she was affectionately known, would have preferred a gift to the building fund of the Nahunta Methodist Church.
