About Eileen Rene Armstrong

WIFE NOT WANTED JOURNALISTS HOME LIFE

MELBOURNE, September II.

Dissolution of her marriage with David George Leslie McClure, sporting journalist, 34 years of age on the ground of desertion, was sought in the Divorce Court before Mr Justice MacFarlane, by Eileen Rene McClure, 29 years of age, to-day. Petitioner's address was given as Montague Street, South Melbourne; and respondent's as Eglington Street, Moonee Ponds. The parties wore married on June 11, 1913,at St. Paul's Cathedral, Bendigo. The suit was undefended. Petitioner's case was that subsequent to the marriage the parties lived at Hargreaves Street, Bendigo, and later in Wattle Street, until June,1919 when the respondent obtainedwork on 'The Argus' as a sporting reporter. During tho previous sixyears their married life had been by no means happy. Petitioner said 'they had had frequent quarrels because he did not provide her with a proper home and forced her to live with his parents; but she saw that she was not wanted in the house; her presence was objectionable to the McClure family. In June, 1919, respondent informed her that he intended to leave Bendigo and come to Melbourne to join tho staff of a newspaper. He came back on several occasions to Bendigo, but refused to take her with him to Melbourne, he said he would never make a homefor her here. He told her that he was sick and tired of her and did not want to have anything more to do with her. He said ho would keep the children, but that she would have to support herself. She came to Melbourne on her own account in 1920. In February, 1921, respondent called at the place where she was living with her mother in South .Melbourne, and said he had made up his mind never to live with her again, but that he would allow her £3/10/- a week for support. Corroborative evidence was given by the petitioner's mother, but the pronouncing of the decree was deferred until further proof of service could be given. Geelong Advertiser !2 September, 1923
