About Elder Davis S Woody, Sr

In 1835, Davis Woody Sr married Parthenia Isbell. They were the parents of Camillus, Sallie Ann, Andrew Kendall, Thaddeus Constantine, Davis Solomon Jr., Parthenia, and Louis Lenix Woody. His second marriage after the death of Parthenia in 1866 was to Amiable Isbell Holloway Kimsey, sister to his first wife Parthenia.

He raised his family in the Brunnert and Schwartze settlement, on the Little Maries River, moving there in 1840. His place became a meeting place for the forward-looking men of the area to discuss matter to the advantage of the new settlement. Primitive Baptist Church services were held there and Davis served as Elder. The first school district in Maries and Osage County included his place and he served as president of the board of directors. He was foreman of the first grand jury in Osage County and was in every way a leader in the settlement. It is not known what his connection was with the military but on his marriage license with Parthenia he is listed as "Captain" Davis Woody. Inscription: This side of the marker states: "To the memory of Elder Davis S Woody, born in Franklin Co. VA. July 10, 1812, Died Sep. 21, 1878. He died as he lived, a christian. Woody"

Note: The marker on the two other side's has memorials to his two wives. The marker is made of metal and the concrete base it sits on was designed with a lip so that the marker sits tightly on the base.
