Dr. Robert "Robin" West, father of Miles West

According to Hoke Holland West, in his history of the West family, "What Is In a Name?" (Quality Printing Co., Gallatin, TN, 1970).

There is no known record of Robert West's birth, but it's believed he came from Charlotte County, VA to Tennessee about 1740-1750. He has been referred to as an English doctor, but also as having been born 1720-1725 in Ireland (probably Ulster). Prince George County, Virginia, land records show a grant to a Robert West dated Dec. 1, 1740. The author believes Robert may have paid for the passage (with 700-800 pounds of tobacco) of his wife-to-be Mary Ann, a young Scotswoman who, upon arrival, was too young to marry, so Robert provided a home for her in Virginia with a friend until she came of age. They probably married in Charlotte County, he writes. They had four sons: Newton, who may have died young; Jesse, who settled in Lankford Hollow, Defeated Creek, TN, with his wife Margaret (or Mary), and died in 1835; Lewis, who married Elizabeth Dabney Whitlock on Aug. 23, 1790; and Miles West, a Baptist minister who was accompanied by his father to Tennessee. Robert, in fact, is thought to have died in Jonesboro, TN in Dec. 1804. It is likely Mary Ann died in Virginia.
