About Eldred Harrington
Served in the First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.
b. Oct. 23, 1842; d. Baker, Kans., Nov. 7, 1909; m. at Whitewater, Wisc., Aug. 19, 1864, Sarah Ameretta Powers, b. Troy, N.Y. and they resided at Baker, Kans. He was ancestor of Grant W. Harrington of Barker Bldg., Kansas City, Kan. She b. Troy Carter, Wisc., Apr. 2, 1845, and d. at Baker, Kan., Jan. 1929. He served in the Civil War, enlisting Aug. 15, 1864, in Battery L., of 1st Wisc. Heavy Artillery, and serving until the close of the war. For the next three years he farmed with his father on Sugar Creek, Wisc. In 1868 he came to Kansas, settling in Brown County, 7 mi. south of Hiawatha on the Kickapoo Indian Reservation, which had just come on the market. He lived on htis farm until 1882, when he moved to the new town of Baker, 1-1/2 mi. away, where he engaged in the grain, live stock, and lumber business until his death. During his entire life in Kansas, he took an active part in public affairs. Soon after his arrival in Brown County a new public schoo district was organized in his neighborhood, and he was made director. A couple of years later he was elected Justice of Peace. At thetime of the Grange movement, he was made County Lecturer. In politics he was a democrat and for 40 years took an active part in practically every convention of his party, both County, and State. He was educated in Milton Academy, Milton, Wisc.
