About Eldridge Fuller

From Pam Wilson, Curator: Kay Mitchell's notes, below, are very helpful. It is fairly evident that the senior of the two Eldridge Fullers (they were not necessarily father and son, but potentially cousins or uncle and nephew) was in Randolph County, married to a Mary, through 1791 when the adultery charges were filed against his wife. After that time, he appears to have migrated to Laurens County, SC, where he is found in the census of 1800 and 1810 with a second wife, who we suppose to be Mary McCool Babb. She died in 1816.

Regarding her marriage date to Eldridge Fuller, her first husband (Babb) died in 1780. However, she was listed as Head of Household in the 1790 census in Laurens County, SC by the name Mary Babb, so I would imagine she didn't marry Mr. Fuller until after that time. From what Kay Mitchell shared about Randolph County, NC records, it appears that Eldridge Fuller was in that county (with another wife named Mary, who was cheating on him and had a child with a David Hicks about 1791) at least as late as 1791. Eldridge Fuller is a Head of Household in Laurens Co, SC in 1800 (indexed in Ancestry.com as FALLER) with a male 26-45 and a woman over 45 (could be a slightly older wife or a more elderly mother), also with a son (?) 10-16. In 1810, he is also in Laurens County (indexed as Eldrege Fuller) with both male and female over 45. So I would conclude that he married her sometime between 1792 (or whenever he migrated to Laurens County) and 1800.

It appears that Eldridge married again because by 1830 (indexed as Eldridge PULLER) he appears to be living in Jackson County, Georgia, aged 70-80, with a wife who is between 50-60.

As to the name of his third wife, Jackson County Georgia marriage records show a marriage between Eldridge Fuller and Nancy Venable on 30 Apr 1825.

The Eldridge Fuller listed as Head of Household in Laurens County in 1840 is a much younger man, aged 40-50, with many children.

From Kay Mitchell http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/EzekielFULLER/2000-04...

Then MARY McCOOL's second marriage (remember she was married to Joseph Babb), in the early 1790's) was to ELDRIDGE FULLER (Ezekiel - Ezekiel - Benjamin - Eldridge). In Deed Bk G, p 528, there is a statement from Eldridge Fuller to Thomas Babb his attorney: "I do hereby authorize you said Thomas Babb to pay over rent and residue and remaining part of my said estate in my said attorney's hands to your mother, Mary Fuller, formerly Mary Babb, for her separate use and maintenance therewith as is most agreeable to herself." Since Mary Babb was listed as head of household on the 1790 census with one male over 16, 3 females under 16 and 2 other females, she remarried between 1790 and 1802. Eldridge was on the 1785 tax list but was not in the 1790 census of Randolph Co NC although he was still living in the county. Now comes a puzzler: On 28 Jul 1791, there was a capias (writ of arrest) taken out "against David Hicks on a charge that he fathered a base-born child upon Mary Fuller, wife of Eldridge Fuller." Then in Sep 1791, there was recorded a presentment of David Hicks. It said that on 10 Jul 1791 and at other times between 1 Jun 1791 and September of that year, he committed adultery with Mary Fuller, wife of Eldridge Fuller. ("Genealogical Journal of Randolph Co NC, Vol XXIII, No 4, pp 27 & 28.)

Then Eldridge moved to Laurens Co SC where, in the 1810 census, he was listed over 45 with no children and a wife also about 45. There was another (or the same) Eldridge Fuller in Jackson Co GA in 1820 or 1830.

[NOTE from Pam Wilson: Depending upon the timing, these events attributed to Eldridge Fuller and his wife Mary may have been regarding a nephew or cousin by the same name]

Regarding first wife of Eldridge Fuller: from the work of George Baumbauch, a Ridge family genealogist http://www.mindspring.com/~baumbach/cody/ridge/godfrey2.htm:

Mary Ridge, wife of Eldridge Fuller, of Randolph County, NC and Laurens Co., SC

Mary Ridge was named as Mary Fuller in her father's Last Will and Testament in 1790 (16). If she was the eldest child, she would have been born about twenty years after her father's birth, or sometime about 1760-1765.

Mary Ridge Fuller was identified as the wife of Eldridge Fuller in two 1791 criminal actions in Randolph County. No marriage record has been found. Note that her brother, Samuel Ridge, was a witness (18).

1791 July 28. Capias against David Hicks on a charge of that he fathered a base-born child upon Mary Fuller, wife of Eldridge Fuller.

1791 September. Presentment of David Hicks that he did on the 10 July 1791 and at other times between 1 June last past and September commit adultery with Mary Fuller, wife of Eldridge Fuller; witness: Sam Ridge

Eldridge Fuller was a landowner in 1785 in Randolph County, suggesting that he and Mary were married before 1785. He was the son of Benjamin Fuller. The Fuller families of Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties, Virginia, and of Granville and Randolph Counties, North Carolina, were descendants of Ezekial Fuller (born 1650-1723) and Deborah Spivey of Isle of Wight County, Virginia (19).

In 1790, there was a Mary Fuller in the US Census of Randolph County in the same area as Godfrey Ridge, with a male under 16. This may have been Mary Ridge Fuller. In 1800 Eldridge was living in Laurens County, South Carolina.

It must also be noted that Babb family researchers claim Mary "Polly" McCool (b. c1744) as the wife of Eldridge Fuller of Laurens County, South Carolina. This Mary McCool later married Joseph Babb, and was buried in the Babb-Kellet Cemetery in Laurens County.
