About Eleanor Matlock
From a Poem by her grandson Eugene L. Matlock
Was she seeking fame,
Or a chance in a New World to change her name?
Which it was matters not, but at least she was "game".
Working her way on a "ship o' the main".
She'd left her home in the Emerald Isle,
With hope in her heart, on her face a smile.
O'er rough stormy seas, for a month or more,
Before land hove in sight, on that far-off shore.
In the new Land of Freedom,
A man passing by chest "48", over six feet high.
Filled to the fullest, her Irish eye!
In this land of the free, This great Melting Pot,
Mates were chose from the heart-beat, where from--mattered not.
John Matlock --his name, and God's favor his aim,
Soon heading "out West", this wedded -pair came;
Made a farm along the Wabash, in Indiana --as to name.
(In his original poem these last two lines were struck as they did not live along the Wabash.)
She was born 01 May 1783 in Roane County Tennessee (?). She married (1) JOHN SHEPARD MATLOCK 07 December 1801 in Roane County Tennessee. She died 09 February 1839 in Yorkville, Kendall Illinois. This couple is buried in the Pavilion Cemetery in Kendall Township, Kendall County Illinois.
