About Eleanor Taylor Hudgins

Wife of Maj. Samuel Taylor.

She died at Salvador Plantation, Pendelton County, South Carolina, much of which is now located on property of Clemson University.

Part of her parentage is unclear. Some say Cannon was her middle name while others say it was her maiden name. She was certainly the daughter of Mrs. Ann Cannon Hudgins/Hudgens but whether the daughter or stepdaughter of Ann's second husband William Hudgins is uncertain.

To complicate matters, Eleanor's first husband was Ambrose Hudgins, either a cousin or her stepbrother, by whom she had one daughter, Sarah Ann Hudgins.

Eleanor Cannon Hudgins married Maj. Samuel Taylor in Charleston in 1769 according to some accounts, and had the following children:

Sarah Eleanor "Ellen" Taylor born 1775 in Charleston, South Carolina; married Gen. John Bayliss Earle. Col. John Taylor born c1778 married 1st Frances Owens, 2nd to Mary Margaret Smith. Maj. Samuel Taylor, Jr., born 1 MAR 1777 married Leah Reese Col.
