Mrs. Helen G. Trudeau, 94-years-old, dies here
Helen Garretson Trudeau, daughter-in-law of the famous Saranac Lake tuberculosis doctor Edward Livingston Trudeau, and grandmother of Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Garry Trudeau, died this morning at Saranac Lake General Hospital. Mrs. Trudeau was 94 years old.
Mrs. Trudeau was the wife of the late Dr. Francis B. Trudeau who died in 1956. She resided at 105 Main Street in Saranac Lake.
Mrs. Trudeau was born on Long Island on July 19, 1888, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abram B. Garretson. Her father was a New Jersey Supreme Court judge.
Mrs. Trudeau came to the Saranac Lake area in 1911 when her sister Josephine contracted tuberculosis and was sent here to cure with Dr. Edward Trudeau. Mrs. Trudeau met Francis Trudeau, youngest son of the famous doctor and married him at Paul Smith's on July 7, 1914.
Mrs. Trudeau was reknown as a sportswoman. Her exploits included hunting, fishing and even a few tips down the t. Van Hovenburg bob run. Mrs. Trudeau once shot a moose while hunting in Canada. She was a world traveler but always considered Saranac Lake home.
Mrs. Trudeau is survived by two sons, Edward L. Trudeau of Albany and Dr. Francis B. Trudeau of Saranac Lake, current president of the Trudeau Institute. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
