Eli was the twin brother of Elias Keeney. He married Elizabeth Pierce in Henry County, Missouri on February 24, 1848. Nine children were born to this union. In 1851 Eli brought his family west on the Oregon Trail with many other family members on the Keeney Wagon Train. Eli and Elizabeth's infant daughter, Frances Ann, died near the end of the journey and was buried near The Dalles, Oregon near the Columbia River. Eli settled near Pleasant Hill, Oregon and farmed there. Eli volunteered during the Rouge River Indian Wars.
