John Jr.'s occupations were farmer, ferryman, blacksmith, locksmith, but best remembered as a gunsmith. Five of his rifles were carried west with five of his sons. The rifle carried by Jonathan Keeney is on display at the Oregon Historical Society. In 1805, he married Mary Ramsey Buckhalter. In 1811, John and his family moved to Fayette County, Indiana where John held a land claim. The family moved again to Ray County, Missouri in about 1825. In the early 1840's, tuberculosis struck the family and three sons (Thomas, Isley and Abraham) died within months of one another. All three left behind wives and young children. John Jr., himself, died of tuberculosis, December 6, 1845, in Holt County, Missouri.
