About Eli McMahan, Sr.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=irisheyes...

There is little agreement on the list of ELI McMAHAN's children. David Templin, in an article for the Newsletter of the "Smoky Mountain Historical Society", names only eight children, but "feels sure there are other children...". Rosa Downey lists the same eight children as David Templin, plus a one WILSON "WILSE" McMAHAN, for a total of nine. Other researchers have named more children, the 'extras' being: ROSA, LAWSON, ROBERT, SARAH "Sally", and still other researchers have also listed a daughter DELANA "Didy" McMAHAN.

Note: At some time, Eli must have lived in Yancey Co., NC as both his son Saunders and Saunders wife Lauritta Campbell are listed as born in NC in the 1850 and 1860 Cocke Co., Census. However, he returned to Tennessee, possibly soon after Rosannah was born. He is listed In the 1839 Tax Rolls for Cocke County. In 1839, Eli McMahan lived in District 10, with 250 acres of land plus 50 acres of "school land". Eli was living in the household of Saunders and Larithy (Lauritta) McMahan in Cocke Co., in the 1850 Census, and is not listed in the 1860 Census. Therefore we presume that he died between 1850 and 1860.

GEDCOM Note

He was PROBABLY born in Virginia, moved to Buncombe County, NC around 1800 and on to East Tennessee by 1810. He was in the Sevier County, TN census of 1830, later moved into Cocke County. He last appears in 1850 in Cocke County in the h/h of his son, Sanders. There is NO AGREEMENT whatsoever on the list of Eli's children. David Templin, in an article for the Newsletter of the "Smoky Mountain Historical Society", names only eight children, but ".. .feels sure there are other children...". Rosa Downey lists the same eight children as David plus a son, Wilson, for a total of nine. Beth O. Freeman, writing in Delmar Baxter's book "Winter/Spring" names twelve children, the 'extras' that she names being: Rosa, Lawson, Robert, and Sarah "Sally". She doesn't list the daughter, Lucinda. Other researchers have listed a daughter, Delana "Didy", for Eli??
