Eli served in the First Dragoons ( US Armys first mounted troops) from 1838 until 1841 at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma and then moved to Missouri from Fort Leavenworth on Discharge, took up farming in Jackson County, He married Nancy Luellen, on April 12, 1846, at Sibley, Ray County, Missouri, Eli Miles and his family live in Ray County or Jackson County, Missouri in 1846/47 and then moved to Indianola, Shawnee County, Kansas circa 1854, when Eli Miles lost his bounty land. Eli and his family are shown in Shawnee County 1860 Census. In 1863 Eli enlisted in Company F, 15th Kansas Volunter Cavalry, where he served until 1865, he was injured when his horse was shot during the battle of Westport. After leaving the Army they settled in Ogden, Riley County, Kansas.
