Evening Times-Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, June 30, 1920, page 8:
INSANE PATIENT RECAPTURED; DIES
ELI SCHULTZ, LISCOMB TOWNSHIP, DIES AFTER FLIGHT FROM OFFICERS.
ESCAPES FROM STATE HOSPITAL; FOUND AT HOME
Tells Officers He Will Not Go Back
To Institution Unless In Box -
Flees From House and Gives Officers
Chase Thru Field - Brought to
City - Dies While Leaving Auto.
Eli Shultz, an aged resident of Liscomb township, who escaped three or four weeks ago from the state hospital for the insane at Independence, where he was committed Oct. 24 last, died suddenly at 10 o'clock this forenoon as he was being taken to the county jail by F.E. Saunders, of the state hospital and Deputy Sheriff W.A. Starn. following an exciting chase and capture.
Shultz was taken into custody early today at his home near Liscomb, after having declared he would not be confined in the state hospital again. The officers found him alone at his home. He had the front door locked and in reply to the officers who called to him to unlock the door, he said:
"You will never take me back unless you take me in a box."
He then turned, grabbed a butcher knife and ran from the house thru a rear door.
Officers Give Pursuit.
The officers gave chase, Shultz taking to a nearby field. He was captured after a short run but the aged man was almost exhausted by his over exertion. He was brought at once to this city but said nothing during the journey and seemed to be unable to recover from his flight.
As he was alighting from the automobile at the jail door he collapsed. Dr. J.F. Battin was called immediately but Schultz had died before the physician arrived. Death was due to heart failure following over exertion.
In Hiding For Weeks.
After his escape from the state hospital Shultz made at once for his home and because of his desire to remain at home and his apparent mental improvement, he was permitted to remain. Recently, however, the hospital authorities were notified and Saunders came to the city Tuesday night to take Shultz back to Independence.
Well Known Near Union.
Schultz, who is 63 years old, was known in Union and its vicinity where he had lived for many years. He was born northeast of the town and has a sister, Mrs. Jack Welch, living at Union, and a brother, Irick Schultz, of Rainier, Ore. A half-brother, John Small, lives at Liscomb and another half-brother, Sherman Small, resides at Clinton.
Mr. Shultz was twice married. His first wife, who is dead, was Miss Nancy Rash. They had five children, Mrs. Walter Swim, Gifford; Roy Shultz and Mrs. John Smith, Marble Rock; Mrs. Dallas Rash, Popejoy, and Link Shultz, Eldora.
The second Mrs. Shultz, who survives her husband, was Mrs. Charlotte Hammer, before her marriage. She had three children, Florence, Vern and Cora, of a previous marriage, who live with their mother in the Honey Creek neighborhood, four miles southwest of Union.
