Elkiam Khumalo (1940 – 1996)

Brief overview:

Elkiam (56), a South African football midfielder who played for Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs. He was shot during a hijacking in 1996. He is the father of Doctor Khumalo.

A few months after his son won the Africa Cup of Nations, Khumalo died on 27 August 1996 in hospital when he was shot during a hijacking outside his home in Soweto. He was shot in the back and his Volkswagen was stolen.

Nelson Mandela sent a letter of condolence to Khumalo's wife reading, "':I learnt with shock of the fatal attack on your husband yesterday. Eliakim was an example and role model to all the young people of this country more especially those associated with football. His death is a tragic loss to us all. The police will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the perpetrators of this deed are brought to book. To you and your family, I convey my sincere condolences in this hour of grief and sorrow.

Soccer club Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday lamented the death of Boy Eliakim "Pro" Khumalo, father of South African international midfielder Doctor Khumalo, who was shot dead by car hijackersoutside his home in Orlando East, Soweto on Tuesday afternoon.

Club director Clarence Mlokoti said the death of Khumalo, aformer Chiefs star, was a great loss.

"Pro was totally dedicted to football. The game was his life's dedication. We are very sad he is no longer with us," Mlokoti said.

Mlokoti said "Pro" had played for the club as a defender in the 1970s. After hanging up his boots he had become assistant coach, taking responsibility for the team's physical conditioning.

Mlokoti said club officials would be visiting the Khumalo home later on Wednesday to find out precisely what had occurred and to convey condolences to the family.

"Pro" Khumalo was certified dead on arrival at Baragwanath Hospital on Soweto's outskirts. He was shot from behind by hijackers who took his Volkswagen Jetta from outside his home at about 5.45pm.

Soweto police spokesman Insp John Shiburi said the car was later recovered in Hillbrow, Johannesburg and a woman arrested.

Soweto Commissioner Victor Nolutshungu condemned Khumalo's murder as "senseless" and sent condolences to the Khumalo family.
