Spouse: Mary Harriet Holland-Hatfield Stemple (1888 - 1962).

Detroit "Troy" Hatfield and his brother Elias both became involved in the saloon business in Boomer, WV and were killed in a dispute over liquor distribution. Newspaper notices of Elias' death:

"TWO FEUDISTS KILLED: Evening Times, Cumberland Maryland, October 18, 1911 - Troy And Elias Hatfield Shot In Whisky Quarrel.

"Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 18— Special dispatches received here say that Troy and Elias Hatfield, two of the Hatfield family of feudists, living near Fayetteville, W. VA, were killed yesterday. Another man, Geromie, an Italian, is believed to have been killed, as the result of an argument over "bootlegging" territory."

Shortly after those killings, many of the Hatfield clan "accept religion": "HATFIELD FEUDISTS ACCEPT RELIGION: New Castle News, October 25, 1911: "HUNTINGTON. W. Va., Oct. 24.—Standing over the biers of their two brothers, Elias and Troy Hatfield, who were shot and killed by an Italian in Fayette County a few days ago, 11 stalwart sons of "Devil Anse" Hatfield, noted feud leader who professed religion, responded to the pleadings of their aged parent, embraced religion and pledged themselves to lead better lives. every member of the noted feud family was at home to attend the double funeral. Troy and Elias Hatfield, the victims of the Italian, were two of thirteen brothers. Every one of these boys was trained in his youth to be prepared to bring about, if necessary, the extermination of the McCoy clan. The bodies of Troy and Elias Hatfield were taken back to their old home in Logan County for burial and "Uncle Dyke" Garrett, the veteran mountain preacher, who led "Devil Anse" to the altar, was summoned to conduct the double funeral. When they saw their brothers cold in death and heard the final benedictions pronounced over them, sorrow filled the hearts of the surviving brothers and they together went forward and made a public confession of Faith."
