About Elias Hunt
"Elias did whatever he could to make a living for his wife and children, who were regularly putting in their appearance. He freighted from the railroad in Milford to the mining camps at Pioche and Delamar in Nevada. He also farmed a small acreage of perhaps 10 or 12 acres; from this he raised feed enough for his team and a cow to supply milk for the family use.
He assisted his father and brothers in caring for cattle at Bull Valley some 10 or 15 miles south of Hebron. Most usually he had a saddle horse to ride on these trips, but if he didn't, he wouldn't hesitate to walk the distance so as to be on hand to do his part in this work. The big "cattle drives" they used to make in the fall to get the cattle to market, was hard work, but never the less, a source of excitement and satisfaction as they trailed along in the dust of the bawling herd, fat from the lush native grasses that grew over the hills.
In 1885, Elias and his family moved to Panaca, Nevada, where he had empolyment with Nephi Wadsworth, his brother-in-law, and Will Edwards, fencing and doing other timber work at which he was very efficient. He also worked in the mines nearby. The family moved back to Hebron then back to Panaca where they were, in 1890 and then to Hebron again.
When the town of Hebron had to be abandoned on account of insufficient water and land, and the feasibility of a dam being put across the Little Pine Valley to turn the water on the fertile soil at the west edge of the vast Escalante desert was discussed and undertaken, Elias and Aluna gave their support. In fact, Elias took over the job of foreman on the reservoir when Hy Bryson of Emery County left. Even when the long tedious, expensive job was completed and the water brought onto the land and the new town of Enterprise begun, Elias had much to do with the distribution of the water."
