Elich Zbarsky

There is some doubt about the date of birth of Jacob Zbarsky.
- His marriage in November of 1917 lists his age as 24 (implying 1893).
- His US WWI registration card (dated 1918-09-12) indicates age 25 (implying 1893) specifies May 25 1893.
- His 1929 Canadian naturalization file lists his birth in Krivo Ozero, Russia (now, Ukraine) as September 1894, but a 1936 request for a replacement certificate of naturalization specifies 1893.
- His gravestone lists his death as March 16 1937, age 43 (implying 1894), but Maita's 2014 recollection was that he was 44 (implying 1893).

Jacob's 1929 Naturalization file is clear on his town of origin, and lists the same town as the birthplace of his wife Eva Hopkins. According to the JewishGen.org Town Finder, the name before WWI was Krivoye Ozero, Balta, Podolia, in the Russian Empire. Between the wars, it had the same name, in the district of Odessa, in Ukraine SSR, in the Soviet Union. Today, it is known as Kryve Ozero, Ukraine, and there are (as of January 2015) 39 people researching 66 names from that town, but none researching family names like Zbarsky or Hopkins. There are, however, many people researching names like Zbarsky on JewishGen.org, some in Ukraine.
