DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 59.
Born in Stonington, Conn. about 1745, son of Jepthia Hewitt and Mary York; died after 1810, probably in Middletown, Delaware Co., NY where he was living at the time. Elijah married OLIVE HAKES, 3 Dec 1769, at the 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington, Conn. (CR). Olive was born in Stonington, 12 Dec 1749 (VR), daughter of George Hanks and Hannah (or Joanna) Jones; date and place of her death is unknown.
Elijah purchased land in Stonington from his father, Jepthia Hewitt, on 8 March 1774, for 18 pounds (Land Records, Vol. 9, p. 41. Prior to that Elijah had land either bought from, or given to him by, his father-in-law, George Hakes. No records of that transaction was found but it was decried in a deed to Elkanah Hewitt from Charles Philips on 5 Feb 1784, as "land originally Elijah Hewitt bought of George Hakes." (Land Records, Vol. 10, p. 447).
After residing in Stonington for many years, Elijah and Olive moved to Ballstown area of Albany co., NY before 1790, and by 1800, they were living in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., NY. Sometime before 1810, they settled in Middletown, Delaware Co., NY with 5 of their sons, George, John, Russell, Noyes, and Daniel. No probate records or grave markers have been found for Elijah or his wife Olive. '''The census records indicate that they have at least 7 sons and 3 daughters but not all the children have been identified.'''
