About Elijah Lake, III

Born in New York state, Elijah Lake migrated with his family to Grant County, Wisconsin. Also lived in Lafayette County, Wisconsin and Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Elijah married Anna Clark on 18 December 1864 in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. By 1870 the couple was residing in Taylor, Dubuque County, Iowa with a daughter, Hattie [Harriet], age two years. Family notes state that Hattie died during childhood.

Elijah and Anna Ordelia subsequently divorced, probably during the mid to late 1870s but no divorce records from that period exists. In the 1880 census of Linn County, Iowa, Anna was household head with two young sons, Henry and Charles. She was operating a boarding house. Elijah was a stove salesman for over 40 years. In 1897, he was employed by J. A. Comstock & Company, a stove manufacturing company located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Elijah died in a Chicago hospital where he had gone for treatment of "tuberculosis of the bowels", probably colon cancer. He suffered a stroke while undergoing treatment. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Kansas City, Missouri. Elijah's will suggests a lack of closeness with his sons since he states that he hadn't seen either in "some" years and heard that one son might have died. In any event, he left a legacy of $100 to each son "if alive" or $200 to a surviving son with the rest of his estate being left to his brother, Walter Ferris Lake of Arlington, Iowa.
