Note:

Elijah Emberry Mastin was born in 1836 in Kentucky. His first name, obviously, came from his grandfather and uncle. The name Emberry, it was learned in Kentuc ky, was given in honor of the family's favorite Maysville Methodist minister. ( it is spelled several different ways.) Elijah became acquanted with Lourena Eli zabeth Dye.who at the time was living with her grandparents and attending schoo l. They were married at Washington Kentucky by the Reverend Hiram Baker, with h er two close friends Nancy Gifford and Mary Clabrook in attendance.

throug h inheritance and purchase Elijah and Lourena acquired properties in Pummel cre ek and Lees creek areas, in the village of Sardis, and in Maysville, Kentucky. They sold the lots in Sardis in 1865. In 1869 she inherited property from her g randfather Luke Dye. Soon afterward the sold tracts of land near Maysville, lot s and fourty five acres near and nineteen on Pummel Creek, and as late as 1878 , after they had gone to Illinois disposed of theirlast two acres in Sardis an d gave two lots to their church. Five children were born to Elijah and Lourena in Mason County and two more in Illinois. After they arrived in Kansas, about 1 878, one more child, Aurther was born. In 1883 they purchased two hundred fourt y acres three miles west of Lost springs in Range 17-4, section 19 (p)....and t ook up residence there.

Twelve years later the 1895 Census shows them to have one hundred seventy acres under cultivation. They had seven horses, nine cows, eight other cattle, twenty bearing apple trees and eighty not yet bearing , as well as other fruit trees. they produced more than two hundred pounds of b utter for sale. Besides the parents, their sons Benjamin and Arther were living at home. they were in school.

Several years later they moved to town wh ere Elijah opened a butcher shop. They had experience, (the son of Arthur Masti n recalls hearing) in butchering cattle and hogs to help supply the many wagon trains and Indian groups which passed through. The nearby "Lost Springs" was an excellent source of water for all. It still flows, though some say "intermitte ntly", a generous stream stream of excellent water from the base of a small hil l in the prairie.

Not long after moving to town Elijah suffered a stroke which affected his left side forcing him to use a cane and carry his left arm i n a sling. This did not keep him from acting as an effective deputy sheriff. In teresting stories are told about his use of his cane or crutch in this capacity . A high-lite of their married life came in 1907 when numerous friends and rela tives staged a surprise Golden Wedding celebration for them in the home of on o f their sons.

Elijah died the twenty-seventh of april 1908 and is burried i n the Lost Springs Cemetary, as is Lourena who died in 1922. The children of th is couple were Mary Alice, George Lyman, William McKenzie, Francis L., Margare t Catherine, Elizabeth Ann, Benjamin Franklin (the great grandfather of the pos ter of this information) Jennie Florence, and Arthur (the father of the late Vi ctor Mastin, from whom all this information above was obtained)
