Elijah Skidmore lived on Leading Creek about three miles from Kerens where he acquired land at the eastern base of Laurel Hill in 1835. He also purchased his father's land on Leading Creek from his brother, Jeremiah Skidmore on October 1847, but the whole of this eventually went to his brother, Thomas. He was a carpenter and he and his sons built the John Baxter Elliott Memorial Church at Meadowville; it was destroyed by a tornado on June 22, 1944. He was visited by an Elder of Brethren Church on October 5, 1857.
He and his wife and a part of their family are buried in a family cemetery across the road from their house near Kerens. His will (dated January 9, 1860) mentions his son, Alpheus Skidmore and his five married daughters, Mary Channell, Jemina Schoonover, Rebecca Burke, Margaret Gilmore and Pery Gilmore. He left his black man to his wife, Margaret, with much else.
