About Elise Pauline Orpen

Elise was a most accomplished woman and the evidence for this is available for all to see of her wild and other individual flower paintings (60 in all) at their Barkly East farm, Avoca, as well as many other paintings of waterfalls, the old garden, as well as two large paintings of all the alpine flowers found in the district. There are also song books with the music and words all written in her hand. All this with 8 children, a husband who lived a very busy public and professional life and who was frequently away, or with whom she travelled to attend Parliament.

Elise's mother's half sister Rebecca married the Rev Gottlob Schreiner and their daughter Olive Schreiner (of Story of an African Farm fame) spent some time at Avoca in about 1871 as a part-time (15 year old) governess when JMO and Elise had some 4 young children.
