Elisha Waugh apparently was a financial backer of an American adventurer named William(?) Walker who tried to set up some kind of American State in Central America in the 1850s.
Elisha Waugh and Patcy Thompson's marriage document is in the Saline County courthouse records in Marshall, MO.
no Revolutionary War veteran ancestors in our line of Chappell's is due to Elisha's grandfather being deceased before the Revolution and Elisha's father being too young to fight in that war. Then too, perhaps the Chappell's just didn't care to get involved in that conflict. Before our Chappell's appeared in Surry County North Carolina they may have lived in Maryland

IGI Search shows Martha J. Thompson, Father - Joseph Thompson, Mother - Elizabeth Thompson, Born 4/17/1815, Bedford Co., MS.It is unsure whether or not this is our Martha Jane Thompson. Notes for ELISHA WAUGH CHAPPELL: NEW INFORMATION 2001:From Arlene White, descendant of Elisha and Peggy Thompson Chappell. 102 Deerfield Road, Kerrville, TX 78028, arwhite@ktc.com,"In 1840 Elisha was in the Saline Co., MO census, his family having come to MIssouri ca. 1834."
From a letter written by Lina C. Burkes to Mary Chapell Crumpler, 1965:"His wife's maiden name was Thompson and my father has been given her name - John Thompson Chappelle. When Dr. Chappelle married her, she was living in Jamestown, VA.It was an elopement, with the eloping couple on horseback followed by her six brothers to a river, where the couple swam across on horseback, and the brothers abandoned the chase. She was disowned by her family because for some reason unknown to me, they disapproved of the Doctor. They were married when they arrived in Missouri. He was 19 and she was 21."
Arlene also says that Elisha and his family went to Wynne, Arkansas, Cross County around 1850, which is below Memphis, southwest on the St. Francis River. This fits the description Uncle Felix writes in his letter to Lennie Thompson in 1920:"one of Pa's sisters married a Dr. by the name of ChapleLinnie that is about all know of the familyFelix Thompson went to the Rocky mountains at about 16 years old got to be chief of a tribe of Indians married the old chief's Daughter, & had 2 children & he died with consumption in the Black walnut flat in Arizonahe was rich I supose with land & cattle so Dr. Chaple His Bro. inlaw went down to wind up the estate, and skiped out the last they heard of him he was down below memphis Ten on the River".
