About Elisha Sage

The date of birth on Elisha's DAR/SAR Rev. War gravestone reversed the numerical date to 13. It should read 31 May 1801, as is supported by the Cromwell Church Records and the book "History and Genealogy of the Montague Family of America," pg. 105. The books also supports that Elisha was born 20 Aug 1755. The Cromwell Church Records support a baptism date of 31 Aug 1755.

Elisha married Martha Montague, 27 Jun 1776, in Cromwell, CT. They had 12 children.

Elisha Sage was a soldier of the Revolution (1776). He and his wife resided, during most of the married life, in Upper Middletown, CT, (originally called "Upper Houses," and is now Cromwell, CT) though they lived a short time at Great Barrington, MA.

He served in the Rev. Army and a bronze marker of the S.A.R. is at his grave. He was a mason, built some of the bridges between here and Hartford. He had the contract for building the exterior walls of the old State House at Hartford, now the City Hall. In 1802 his widow petitioned the General Court to be relieved of the charges made by reason of his having failed to complete his contract on time, alleging that the materials were not promptly furnished. It has been ascertained very recently that Bulfinch was the architect. Nothing further is known of the details than these slight ones, concerning this ancient 1793 edifice. In 1798 Elisha Sage was sued by the church for $15 pew rent; the papers, however, do not show the result of this effort to collect.

A good bit more detail on Elisha's ancestors can be found in the referenced text "Middletown upper houses". It appears that there is also a lot of information on the Montague line (his wife's family).
