Biography
[1] Elisha Steele died October 16, 1811 and is buried at 'Old Bethlehem Cemetery', Bethlehem, CT. H/O Susannah Strong Steele Sgt., CT-Revolutionary War Elisha lived during the Revolutionary War period, and so he, as well as two of his brothers, John and Solomon, served in the colonial militia . He is shown as a Private in Captain Eli Parker's Company of Colonel Leonard's Regiment.
He enlisted for this unit 8 May 1777, and served two months and eight or nine days, during which time his company marched from Hampshire County in Massachusetts on 8 May 1777, to re-enforce the Continental Army at Ticonderoga, New York, a distance of about eighty miles, more or less.
They were there two months when he apparently joined Lieutenant Martin Wate's Company of Colonel Ruggles Woodbridge's Regiment, and began a four day expedition to the Northern Department. The company was reported to have marched to New Providence on an alarm at Bennington on 17 August 1777.
He is listed as Sergeant from Connecticut. The roll on which he is listed was sworn to in Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
