About Elishama Eldridge
arrival in 1761 to Yarmouth Nova Scotia
Descendants of the Perry, Ellis and Landers families; On the 9th of June 1761, Moses Perry, Ebenezer Ellis, Sealed Landers and their families, 17 people in all, landed on the shores of the Chebogue River, with their livestock and belongings. On the 11th of June, Joshua Burgess and Jonathan Crosby and their families arrived. The Township of Yarmouth, located at what is now known as Chebogue Point, had begun! Elishama Eldridge and his family, as well as other families, arrived during the summer of 1761. But only the Perry, Ellis, Landers, Burgess, Crosby and the Eldridge families suffered through the first long winter of 1761/62 before fresh provisions and more families arrived.Moses and Eleanor Perry spent the first winter on Crawleys Island before relocating to the Chebogue area. Ebenezer and Hannah Ellis spent the first winter on Shurtliff’s Point and then relocated to the northern part of Chebogue. Sealed and Thankful Landers established their home, and Sealed’s Grist Mill, in the area of what is known as Milton. It is only proper to mention a prominent English speaking settler to arrive in this area was Ephraim Cooke. He visited the shores of the Chebogue River during the 1750’s as a seasonal fisherman from New England. He fished here during the summer and returned to New England at the end of the fishing season. He did, however, return to become a permanent settler in 1762.
The first three families of settlers (Planters) arrived from Sandwich, Cape Cod on Tuesday, June 9, 1761. They were Sealed Landers, Ebenezer Ellis an dMoses Perry and their families. On the following Thursday two other families arrived from Connecticut…Jonathan Crosby and Joshua Burgess. During the summer Elishama Eldridge and seven other families arrived but two of these seven went back to New England the sam eFall and the remaining five also went back the next Spring. Their ship arrived at what is known as Crawley's Island in Chebogue (Jebogue) Harbour and the Perry family remained in that area. The Ellis family moved further down river near the point. Landers settled at the head of the Tidal area, now Milton, at the head of the Yarmouth Harbour. Elishama Eldridge settled at Fishpoint…the sole inhabitants of Cape Forchu.
