About Eliza Gates Lord, 1st
Joseph Lyman, b. 25 Aug., 1790, at Litchfield. He m. 10 May, 1812, Maria Tryon. They settled at Boston, and in 181 5 removed to Baltimore, where he was a merchant, and where she d. 14 May, 1816. They had two children :
1. Maria Therese, b. 20 Feb., 1813, m. Joseph M. Boardman, of Macon Ga., and d. 15 July 184 — .
2. Helen Louise, b. 15 June, 1815. She d. 28 Oct., 1834, at Clinton, Ga.
Joseph Lyman Lord then m. 18 Jan., 1818, Frances Douglass Gates, b. 11 March, 1790, daughter of Major Lemuel Gates, of the United States army. They removed to Boston in 1819, and to Taunton, Mass., in 1827, where he was a merchant and postmaster. In 1835 they removed to New York, where he was engaged in business until 1845. He then originated and became the agent of the mutual benefit life insurance company of New York, where he was such agent in 1859.
He had by her eight other children:
3. John Pierpont, b. 28 Oct., 1818, at Baltimore. He m. at Macon, Ga., Mary Ann Flanders, b. 1 April, 1822, at New York. He was a merchant, and they settled at Macon, and removed to Brooklyn, N. Y., where they were living in 1859. They had eight children: Joseph Pierpont, b, 16 July, 1839, d. 31 July, 1839; William Gates, b. 23 June, 1840; Frances Anna, b. 26 Jan., 1843; Maria Therese, b. 28 Nov., 1844; Mary Anne, b. 6 Aug., 1846; Charles Strong, b. 27 Aug., 1848, d. 18 Sept., 1849; Pierpont Flanders, b. 22 Nov., 1852, d. 6 March, 1854; and Charles Pierpont, b. 27 July, 1854, d. 9 Aug., 1855.
4. Frances Anna, b. 15 March, 1820, at Boston. She m. 26 Oct., 1842, Charles A. Strong, of New York, who d. 17 Jan., 1851. She was living at Brooklyn in 1859, and they had two children: Marion F., b. 5 Sept., 1844, and Helen A., b. 16 July, 1846.
5. Joseph Lyman, b. 5 July, 1821, at Boston. He m. Aurelia Pratt, of New York, where they were living in 1859, and had one child: Charles Strong, b. 25 March, 185 1, d. 25 Nov., 1854.
6. Eliza Gates, b. 23 July, 1823, d. 7 Nov., 1823.
7. William Gates, b. 23 Oct., 1824, d. 3 April, 1826.
5. Eliza Gates 2nd, b. 22 Jan., 1827, at Boston. She m. 11 April, 1853. George D. Puffer, of Brooklyn, N. Y., and had three children: George E., b. 5 Feb., 1854, d. 16 March, 1855; Frank D., b. 17 May, 1855; and William Lord, b. 14 Jan., 1858.
9. Joseph Sproat, b. 4 Aug., 1830, at Taunton, d. 24 Feb., 1831.
10. Joseph Sproat, 2nd, b. 23 Feb., 1832, at Taunton. He m. 8 Sept., 1856, Emily Puffer, of Brooklyn, where they were living in 1859, s. p.
