About Elizabeth Benton
Elizabeth was born in Waxahachie, Texas, daughter of Nathaniel Grigsby Wise and Isphemia Chapman Wise. She married Maecenas Eason Benton. They lived in Neosho, Missouri, where they had four children, Thomas, Mary, Nathaniel, and Mildred. The oldest son was the artist Thomas Hart Benton, named for the great-uncle who was Missouri's first senator.Elizabeth followed her son Tom to Paris, but eventually she made her home with her older daughter, Mary, who was often alone with her children when her husband was aboard ship with the Navy. Ultimately, the families of Mary and Tom both settled on Martha's Vineyard, with Elizabeth.
