Rachel Porter Goodwin's tombstone was located along the new Dandy Loop Road and near Back Creek, but is now missing. She is the first wife of Major James Goodwin, who was born in London about 1625, son of London salt merchant, Peter Goodwin. James came to Virginia in 1650. He was a justice with a title Major in the militia from 1657 to 1662 and in 1658 he represented York County in the House of Burgesses, also its' Speaker. He was a plantation owner and grew mostly tobacco and corn. They had seven children: Robert, Job, Peter, Matthew, Martin, Susannah, and Elizabeth. Rachael was the daughter of John Porter of Norwich County, England. Their homestead was an imposing two-story structure facing Goodwin Island on the Thorofare in what is known as Dandy. The house was torn down shortly after 1900. It was reported to be located where "Powell Beatty" once lived.
