Elizabeth's origins are uncertain. She is presumed to have been born in England. Bond gives her birthdate as 1640.[1] She was the wife of John Nevinson.[1][2] Bond states that "whether [she] came with him" from England to America in 1668 "has not been ascertained; probably not."[1] Torrey states that she married John Nevinson in Massachusetts in about 1669. Torrey names her as "Elizabeth ?PAYNTON (1640-1720)."[2]

John and Elizabeth Nevinson resided in Watertown, Massachusetts. Six children are recorded from their marriage,[1] including:[3]

  1. Mary, eldest ch., b. in England, m. Samuel Hastings (sister's wid.);
  2. John, d. 23 Feb 1692, unm.;
  3. Sarah, b. 22 Jul 1672, m1. Nathaniel Stearns, m2. Samuel Livermore;
  4. Elizabeth, b. 22 Oct 1675, m. Samuel Hastings;
  5. Ann, b. 2 Oct 1678, m. Joshua Grant;
  6. William, b. 26 Jun 1681, d. 1711, unm.;

Elizabeth became a member of the First Church of Watertown, Massachusetts, on 13 November 1687. Her husband was a member of the Church of England and did not join the Watertown church.[1][4]

Following John Nevinson's death in 1695, Elizabeth married William Bond.[3] He died in December 1695, leaving her a widow for the second time. She returned to John Nevinson's house in Watertown, Massachusetts, and took over the operation of the public house he had run, continuing in that business for about 20 years. She died August 24, 1720, and her will was proved September 20, 1720.[1]

She was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Watertown, where the epitaph on her gravestone reads:[5]

Here Lyes Buried ye Body of Mrs. Elizab'th BOND. Wife to William BOND, Efq'r, Who Dec'd Aug'ft 24th 1720, in ye 82d Year of Her Age
