About Mary Herbert

Mary Bowne

  • Daughter of William Bowne and Ann Unknown
  • Thomas Herbert immigrated from Devonshire, Bermuda after the death of his father. Thomas parents were Richard Herbert and Bridget Cooke of England. Captain Richard Herbert is listed as a member of the "Virginia Company of London" page 3. Also see Records of the Virginia Company of London, vol. 4, p. 363 He was ELEC: ABT 1638 Councilor, Devonshire, Bermuda, Great Britain In 1638, Richard Herbert was elected Councilor in Devonshire, Bermuda, Great Britain. Source: "The Adventurers of Bermuda": A history of the island from its discovery until the dissolution of the Somers Island Company in 1684, page 402. Thomas probably married Mary Bowne when his family immigrated to Gravesend, Long Island, N. Y, then both families immigrated again to New Jersey. 1670, Jan. 5. The inhabitants of Gravesend concluded to lay out some lands in severalty and the consent or agreement was signed by "William Oby John Dassett," confirming the statement of the Bowne family removal from Gravesend. In 1675, there was likewise assigned him, in Gravesend, a fifteen acre lot in the Neck. In the Monmouth Patent most of his interests apparentis lay in the lands about Portland Point, for I find only one home lot in Middletown New Jersey belonging to him, and that not in the original division, but simply mentioned, in October.
