About Elizabeth Bynum

Elizabeth Shugan/Sugars was born about 1704, Isle of Wight, Virginia, she died between July 3, 1771 and July 3, 1773, Southampton County, Virginia. She is the daughter of John Shugan (1662-1726) and Elizabeth Swann (1673-1727).

Elizabeth married her 1st husband, Elias Ford III, about 1722, Southampton County, Virginia. They had one son: John Fort born in 1723. Elias Ford III died in 1724.

10 July 1725 Supplemental inventory of Elias Fort Jr, decd, returned by Elizabeth Bynum, administratrix. Two mares, one breeding mare, and a colt valued at Af7.0 Appraised by William Rose, John Sowerby and Nicholas Proctor [1] Elizabeth Fort had married William Bynum s/o John Bynum II, between May 1724 and July 1725.

1723 William Bynum and Mary his wife of the Upper Parrish of Isle of Wight Co, conveyed to Edw. Grantham 400 acres of land on Blackwater Swamp in Surry County. [ So William's first wife Mary died bet 1723 and 1724] On May 20, 1724, Elizabeth Foot (Fort) returned an inventory of Elias Foots estate, and on July 21, 1725, Elizabeth Bynum returned an additional inventory.[2]

Elizabeth Bynum was mentioned in her father's will of 1726.[3]

Her son John Fort made a deed of gift of 11 slaves to his mother Elizabeth Bynum in 1761.[4]

William Bynum died interstate, about 1762.[5]

Elizabeth's will: written 7/3/1771, proved 7/3/1773

  • left 4 slaves to son William Byrum,
  • 2 slaves to son Benjamin Bynum,
  • 3 slaves to daughter Abigail Williamson,
  • and the residual estate to son Michael Byrum,
  • gave one slave each to grandsons Cordall Norfleet Bynum and Benne Bynum (with reversion to granddaughter Millie Bynum)
  • Abigail's 3 slaves were to revert to her children Colin, Temperance, Priscilla Whitehead and Robert Mickelberry Williamson upon her death.
  • Executers: William Bynum, Michael Bynum and William Blunt[6][7]
  • One son Drury had died prior to his mother's death.
