About Elizabeth Charlton, Countess of Rutland
http://www.wellington-shropshire.gov.uk/our-parish/history-of-welli...
Apley Castle was built north east of the town centre, where the members of the Charlton family lived and who were mainly supporters of the Crown. Apley lay close to The Portway, the shortest route from Newport. Wellington is an ancient town in Shropshire.
Wellington gained an important place in British history when King Charles I stayed overnight from 19th to 20th September 1642 at Apley Castle. He and his growing army had spent the night on their recruitment journey from Nottingham to Shrewsbury.
