About Elizabeth Clayton

Elizabeth Langley Clayton suffered a tragic death. While preparing for the evening meal on June 29, 1829, the fireplace over which she was cooking the meal, collapsed on her, crushing her skull, and severely burning her. An inquest was held about her death, and these records are available at the court house in Pickens, SC. While her grave is not specifically marked, she is located in Clayton Cemetery, which is a few hundred yards from the homeplace of William, where he lived for many years.

The Fredrick Van Clayton Family bible shows that Elizabeth Langley married William Clayton. That bible is on file in the Clayton Room, at Southern Wesleyan College, Liberty, Pickens County, SC, and was obtained by Faith Clayton when she was researching the family.
